Return to Work Assessment

MedicalCorporate & Private Customers

A return to work assessment is a comprehensive evaluation designed to determine an employee’s physical and mental readiness to resume work following a long-term absence or illness. The assessment identifies any barriers to returning to work and provides practical recommendations to overcome them. It also highlights health and safety issues that need to be addressed before the employee re-enters the workplace. Our expert team ensures compliance with industry standards, delivering tailored occupational health services that support both employees and employers.

Further Information

This service is essential for employees returning after a long-term absence due to illness or injury, helping ensure they can safely and effectively resume their duties.

  • Discussion: A qualified occupational health physician will review your medical history, current health, and any health-related challenges that impact your job. They will also discuss the physical and mental demands of your role and assess your current functional capabilities.
  • Tests: Depending on the nature of your job, the assessment may include:
    • Blood pressure measurement
    • BMI calculation
    • Lung function test
    • Hearing and eyesight assessments
    • Urine sample analysis
    • Hand and arm vibration screening (if applicable)
  • Recommendations: The physician will provide clear recommendations to facilitate a safe and effective return to work, tailored to your specific needs.

The assessment typically takes approximately 45 minutes.

  • A qualified HSE-approved Occupational Health Physician will conduct the assessment.

  • After the assessment, the physician will prepare a detailed report with advice and recommendations.
  • This report is sent to your employer, but only with your consent.
  • Your employer will then schedule a meeting to discuss the report and determine the next steps.

  • Photo ID (passport or driving licence)
  • A list of current medications
  • Any supporting NHS documentation related to your condition

No specific clothing or footwear is required.

  • If the occupational health assessment determines that you are not fit for work, additional safety measures may be recommended. For example, a phased return may be suggested, or if your job involves hazardous substances, you may need extra personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Employees should also communicate with their employer to ensure they are ready to return and have the necessary support. Employers typically outline their return-to-work process in their absence policy.
  • Failure to disclose symptoms or concerns may prevent the occupational health professional from fully assessing your fitness for work, delaying necessary interventions.
  • If you wish to bring a chaperone, please notify us in advance.
