Doctors Referrals & Reports
An occupational health referral is submitted by an employer to an occupational health (OH) provider regarding the physical or mental health of an employee. The entire process is completely confidential, with the primary aim of supporting the employee’s well-being and facilitating a safe and healthy return to work where applicable.
Our expert team ensures compliance with industry standards, delivering exceptional occupational health services tailored to your business needs.
Further Information
Pathways Occupational Health provides occupational health referrals for employees and students whose health may be affecting their ability to work or study effectively.
- Employees: An employer may refer an employee to occupational health if they are struggling with their mental or physical health, or if they have been off sick for an extended period.
- Students: A university may refer medical or dental students to occupational health if they are having difficulty studying or participating in clinical placements.
An occupational health physician can provide advice and support to employees and their managers. They can also help employers understand what their employees need to feel better, return to work, and avoid further health issues.
The occupational health assessment takes place through one of the following methods:
- Telephone consultation
- Video consultation
- Face-to-face visit
- Consultation with an OH physician
At Pathways Occupational Health, we prioritise accuracy and efficiency, ensuring a smooth and stress-free experience for all employees.
The occupational health assessment typically takes approximately 45 minutes.
A qualified DOCCMED occupational health physician will carry out the assessment. Only DOCCMED-certified OH physicians are permitted to perform referrals.
- The findings from the occupational health assessment are published in a clinical report for the employee to review.
- The employee must provide consent before the report is shared with their employer.
- Consent can be given verbally at the time of the assessment or via written consent post-assessment.
The report will include any recommendations or follow-ups relevant to the employee’s health and work requirements.
- Photo ID (passport or driving licence).
- List of current medications.
- Supporting information from a GP or hospital consultant, if applicable.
There are no specific clothing or footwear requirements for this assessment.
Employers should provide detailed information in the referral, including:
- Job role and responsibilities
- Absence record
- Relevant health conditions
- Specific referral questions to help the OH physician provide relevant advice
Employers should also outline any care or support the employee may need, based on their health and job role.
