Chester Step Test (CST)

Corporate & Private Customers

The Chester Step Test (CST) is a fitness assessment that measures aerobic capacity by having individuals step on and off a low step at a controlled pace. Heart rate and perceived exertion levels are monitored throughout the test to evaluate cardiovascular health and endurance. This assessment can help identify individuals with potential heart conditions and guide exercise and treatment recommendations.

Further Information

The CST is widely used in industries that require employees to maintain a high level of physical fitness, including:

  • Oil and Gas Workers: Part of the OGUK Offshore Medical Test, essential for those working offshore.
  • Maritime Workers: Seafarers must meet specific fitness standards, with CST used to assess aerobic capacity.
  • Wind Turbine Workers: Mandatory as part of the RUK Renewables Medical to ensure physical capability for working at height.

Before the test, a qualified technician or nurse will measure your height, weight, and blood pressure. A heart rate monitor is placed on your wrist, with chest straps for accurate tracking. The test involves:

  • Stepping on and off a designated step in time with a metronome.
  • Continuing until reaching approximately 80% of your maximum heart rate or a moderately vigorous level of exertion.
  • Monitoring heart rate and perceived exertion every two minutes.
  • Completing the test within a maximum of 10 minutes.
  • Calculating aerobic capacity and fitness rating using exercise heart rates.

Our team ensures a comfortable and stress-free experience while delivering accurate results.

The Chester Step Test typically takes approximately 25 minutes.

A qualified occupational health technician or a registered occupational health nurse will conduct the test.

On average, a Chester Step Test certificate is valid for 1 to 2 years, depending on company-specific criteria. The validity of your certificate will be based on your employer’s policies.

  • A valid photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence.
  • Inform the clinic in advance if you take beta blockers, as this may affect your test results.

To ensure comfort and optimal performance during the test, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing, activewear, and trainers.

  • If you have heart disease, suspect you may have heart disease, or have major risk factors, consult your doctor before undergoing the CST.

A new project arrived and I was asked to start a new position in only a weeks’ time. As exciting as this was, the job required me to take a Chester Step Test Assessment before I started. This left me only 2 days where I could be free for the medical, as well as sorting out a ton of paperwork, accommodation, car hire etc, you could say I was beyond stressed.

Someone told me about Pathways Occupational Health. I called them straight away and they understood my situation completely. They moved their staff breaks around so they could fit me in that same day. They told me over the phone, exactly what to bring and what to wear.

The place was easy to find, just off the A66. When I arrived I was given a private room to change in. They were super friendly, polite and professional and really made me feel at ease. It was over in no time, and I was over the moon that I’d ticked a box off my list so quickly.

To sum it up, they were understanding, welcoming, professional, uncomplicated and painless.

Highly recommend!
