Chest X-ray

Corporate Customers Only

A chest X-ray is a vital component of occupational health surveillance, designed to monitor the respiratory health of employees who may be exposed to hazardous substances. Prolonged exposure to dust and chemicals can lead to serious respiratory conditions, including:

  • Pulmonary tuberculosis
  • Asbestosis
  • Silicosis
  • Coal worker’s pneumoconiosis

Our experienced team ensures all X-rays are conducted in line with industry regulations, delivering high-quality services tailored to your organisation’s health and safety requirements.

Further Information

Chest X-rays are recommended for individuals working in environments where respiratory hazards are present. These may include:

  • Workers exposed to silica dust: As per Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines, individuals exposed to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) should undergo regular chest X-rays as part of a health surveillance program to monitor for silicosis.
  • New employees with a positive tuberculin skin test: Individuals testing positive through the Mantoux tuberculin skin test should receive a chest X-ray to screen for tuberculosis. Any abnormal findings will result in a referral to a TB clinic for further evaluation.
  • Employees exposed to hazardous substances: Workers in environments with asbestos, beryllium, cadmium, coal dust, cobalt, cotton dust, or talc should undergo chest X-rays as part of their routine occupational health assessments.

A single-view chest X-ray is performed by certified radiologists at an approved local private hospital. The process is as follows:

  1. Appointment Scheduling: Pathways Occupational Health will coordinate the appointment and confirm the details via email.
  2. X-ray Procedure: The procedure is conducted following the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993.
  3. Report and Results: A radiology report is typically available within 3-5 working days.

Our team is dedicated to providing a seamless and efficient experience, ensuring minimal disruption to your workday.

The appointment takes approximately 30 minutes from start to finish.

The chest X-ray is performed by a third-party radiologist at an accredited medical facility.

Upon receiving the radiology report, our Occupational Health Physician (OHP) will:

  • Review the results and compile an occupational health report.
  • Issue a certificate of fitness.
  • Provide a copy of the certification to the individual or employer, depending on the booking arrangement.

Employees can request a personal copy of their X-ray and report.

  • Bring a valid photo ID (passport or driving licence).

  • There are no specific clothing or footwear requirements.

  • If tuberculosis (TB) is diagnosed, additional blood tests may be performed to determine whether the TB is active or dormant.
  • Early detection of respiratory conditions through chest X-rays enables prompt medical intervention and, where necessary, the removal of individuals from hazardous environments to prevent further health complications.
