Further Information

A Bruce Protocol Stress Test may be recommended for individuals experiencing symptoms that could indicate a heart condition, such as:

  • Chest pain or discomfort.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Dizziness.
  • A fast or irregular heartbeat.

This test can help doctors diagnose various heart conditions, including:

  • Coronary artery disease.
  • Congenital heart disease.
  • Congestive heart failure.
  • Heart valve disease.
  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Additionally, a stress test can determine how well an individual’s heart responds to physical exertion and assess their risk before undertaking activities that may strain the heart.

  • Exercise Test: The patient walks on a treadmill, starting at 1.7 mph on a 10% incline
  • Progressive Stages: Every 3 minutes, the treadmill increases in speed and incline to gradually intensify the workload
  • Monitoring: Heart rate, blood pressure, and electrical activity are continuously monitored
  • End of Test: The test concludes when the patient reaches their target heart rate or experiences symptoms that require stopping

The entire appointment typically takes approximately 60 minutes.

  • A Cardiologist will perform the test at a local hospital
  • Pathways Occupational Health arranges the appointment, with confirmation provided through your employer or private email

  • For employer bookings, Pathways Occupational Health receives the results electronically
  • For private appointments, patients receive their results on the same day
  • An Occupational Health Physician (OHP) will interpret the results, provide a report, and issue certification
  • If consent is provided, employers will also receive the results and certification

Patients must bring a valid photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence.

As the test involves physical exertion, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing, activewear, and trainers.
